What is it?

Google Reader was (Google killed it last year) a feed aggregator where the aggregator is on Google servers and providing an API so different clients can read the aggregated feeds.

Alternatives

There are lots of standalone feed aggregators:

• Akregator
• RSS Bandit
• Thunderbird (yes, it's also a feed aggregator)
• Vienna

And some server aggregators with an API for clients:

• ownCloud News app
• Tiny Tiny RSS
