What is it?

Google Custom Search is a service from Google that allows you to embed Google Search on your website.

Basically, you have a Google search box on your website, typing a query in it provides matching results on your website (like if you were going to Google search and typing something like site:mywebsite.com my search but all that embedded on your website).

Alternatives

In my previous post I talked about the distributed search engine YaCy. YaCy can be set up to index your domain only and YaCy implements different OpenSearch technologies allowing the use of standard queries and results APIs.

For instance the search box on my blog is using it with a very simple HTML form. You can have a quick look on YaCy API page. Some more code snippets are provided in YaCy's admin pages.
